Original Haiti Poems

QUAKE – Built from Nothing lauched the poemcatching journey on the pavements of St Andrew’s in March 2010.

The world had experienced 2 horrific earthquakes, first in Haiti and then in Chile. I wanted to do something, but I had nothing. It dawned on me the the people in Haiti also had nothing, and that made it an excellent starting point.

So I simple picked up a piece of cardboard on the street. Wrote a sign, saying “Donate a Poem” and sat down on a sunny streetcorner begging for poems.

Within 5 minutes a man gave me £1. I tried to refuse it. Within minutes a couple came. She wrote a poem. He gave me money. This time I accepted more graciously. It seemed I was onto something…

When the police officer suggested that I might be on the wrong side of the law, I was happy to put the hat away. Those first folk gave me the confidence that I was doing the right thing.

By the end of the day I had 58 fresh poems each using the word QUAKE. The rest is history.
